The Family Parsha Book
As a concerned educator and a father of six I am always looking for ways to keep my children interested and involved at the Shabbat table. I want the Shabbat table to serve as the focal family meeting place and represent out commitment to Torah. Two years ago I introduced my family to a Hebrew ספר which asked questions on the weekly Parsha and whose answers followed an א,ב sequence whereby the first answer began with an א, the second answer with a ב etc. I challenged my children for the answers while sitting around the Shabbat table and concurrently reviewed the Parsha, using the ספר as the incentive. My children embraced the challenge and the questions became part of our Shabbat ritual. Friends who joined us for the Shabbat meal were impressed by the learning exchange and interaction and they often commented at how our children would sit at the table. The א,ב format encouraged my children because it provided helpful hints. Adults also found the ספר challenging and a useful way of reviewing the parsha. Through the encouragement of my wife, family and friends, I decided that the format of such a positive learning tool should be available to facilitate all Jewish families and educators. I developed my own challenging questions and decided to make a more comprehensive sefer.
In addition to a review of פרשת השבוע, the Family Parsha Book includes Haftorah Highlights, which explains the Parsha's connection with the Haftorah as well as the Parsha Puzzler, which promoted a thorough analysis of one of the main issues in each Parsha. Following some of the questions there are points of discussion on Jewish laws that relate to the answer. Reviewing these הלכות helps demonstrate the connection between the written and oral law.
